A large fire has broken out in the Milburngate development on Durhams riverbanks. Plumes of smoke have been seen obscuring the road. The fire started at around 2pm on Wednesday afternoon.
The fire now looks to be largely extinguished, although the knock on disruption to traffic has caused gridlock around Durham City.
Emergency services are currently on scene. Motorists and pedestrians have been advised to avoid the city center until further notice.
