Durham Markets Company is inviting aspiring young retailers and established young traders to join the city’s heat of the National Young Traders’ Competition. The Market, which is free to trade at, is open to any trader between the ages of 16 and 30, giving them an opportunity to try face to face retailing, or to test a product idea with a buying public.
The Durham Heat will take place on Monday 30th May, with the competing young traders in Durham Market Place from 11am to 4pm. The top three traders from the Durham heat will be invited to trade at the North East regional final in Darlington in July, with the winner from that event being invited to the National Final in Stratford-upon-Avon in August.
The competition is run by the NMTF, the national trade association for market and street traders.
Colin Wilkes, Managing Director of Durham Markets Company, commented: “One of the most exciting elements of this market is discovering the young people’s ideas and their creativity, and for anyone who has an idea, or has started trading their concept online, the experience of dealing directly with potential shoppers is rewarding and really enjoyable. In previous years, traders from Durham have made it all the way to the National Final, and we encourage aspiring entrepreneurs to sign up and make the most of this experience, which has the potential to be a real ‘leg-up’ for a young business.
“The competition is open to established and new traders under the age of 30, so we’re hoping to bring familiar faces into the market as well as new ones.”
